  • I am seeing frequent “Request Timeout” messages, can only use vlingo when I am on WiFi, or can’t get past Step 4 of the setup wizard.
  • Note to WiFi Users: There is a known issue in which vlingo will work when connected via WiFi, but will not work on the mobile network.  For many users, simply turning WiFi off while on the mobile network will fix this. We know this is not a long term solution and are working on a fix, but in many cases it will get you working.  If it doesn’t and you still receive Request Timeout messages, keep reading.  Most T-Mobile users will need to take the additional steps below if they are running a version of our software earlier than 1.0.1.12535.

We have identified an issue that was preventing a number of people from using vlingo.  This issue was particularly prevalent for people on the T-Mobile network, but affected other networks as well.  We have released a new version of vlingo that solves most of these problems.  If you are seeing this problem and are running a vlingo version number lower than 1.0.1.12535 (click vlingo, then select Help and About vlingo to check), you should:

    1. Delete the current version of vlingo from your BlackBerry.  This is an important step, and will prevent the new version from functioning correctly if skipped. To delete the current version:
      1. Click Options on your Home screen
      2. Choose Advanced Options and then Applications
      3. Scroll down the list to vlingo. When vlingo is highlighted, press the Menu button and choose Delete.
      4. Confirm the deletion, and then your BlackBerry will restart.
    2. Go to the vlingo home page and download the latest version of vlingo.

Note that in some cases you may still need to make some configuration changes in order to make vlingo work on your device.  The most important items to try if you are still experiencing problems:

    1. Make sure your APN is set correctly. These settings are accessed through the BlackBerry Options, selecting Advanced Options and then TCP. While generally these will be correct when you first receive the phone, sometimes this is not the case. The correct settings depend on your BlackBerry network carrier.  These settings need to be specified by your carrier, but there are various sources that have compiled lists of settings for a variety of carriers.  Here is one site that we have found useful for this:
    2. http://blackberryforums.pinstack.com

    3. Try changing the port that vlingo uses to communicate with our servers.  To do this:
      1. Click the vlingo application icon on your Home screen and choose vlingo Options
        • If you are stuck at step 4 of the set up wizard, push the menu key and select Options
      2. Scroll down to Connection Port. Try toggling this setting (switch from Standard to Alternate, or Alternate to Standard)
      3. Save your changes

Note to T-Mobile and Rogers users:  We have found that in almost all cases you should be set to Alternate.

Finally, there is the known issue with WiFi we referred to above. In some cases, you will find that vlingo works while on WiFi, but not while on the mobile network. In this situation, you can often enable vlingo by turning WiFi off.  To do this:

    1. Open the Manage Connections page from the BlackBerry home screen.
    2. Click to uncheck the box next to WiFi.
    3. You should see a red X appear next to WiFi.

In most cases, we find that these steps solve connectivity problems. If this does not solve your problem, please contact vlingo Support.

  • I am seeing frequent "Request Timeout" messages, can only use vlingo when I am on WiFi, or can't get past Step 4 of the Setup Wizard.
    1. First, make sure that you have the latest version of vlingo. Version 1.1 simplifies or eliminates a number of the issues that users might previously have encountered. To determine which version you are running:
      1. Click the vlingo icon on your Home screen.
      2. Select Help.
      3. Select About vlingo
      4. If the version starts with 1.0, you should download the latest version by pointing your built-in BlackBerry browser to:
        http://m.vlingo.com
and clicking on "Download Now!" in the "Download vlingo" section of the page.

    2. Once you have the latest version, if you are still having connection problems there are a few things you can try. If you have a GSM phone, the most common issue we see is that the phone came with its APN not set correctly. The APN must be set correctly for the Direct TCP connection type to work. We have found that this is typically the quickest connection. Note that CDMA devices do not need to set an APN. First you'll need to determine which technology your phone uses:
      1. Click Options from the BlackBerry Home screen
      2. Click About
      3. At the top of the screen, you should see two lines of text describing your BlackBerry. This should include either (CDMA) or (GSM).
      4. Exit back to your BlackBerry's Home screen.
    3. Complete this step only if you have a GSM phone. Otherwise, skip to Step 4.

First, you need to know what your APN setting should be. This needs to be specified by your carrier, but there are various sources that have compiled lists of settings for a variety of carriers. Here is one site that we have found useful for this:

      http://blackberryforums.pinstack.com/360-tcp_apn_wap_gateway_port.html

To check and change your settings:
      1. Click Options from the BlackBerry Home screen
      2. Choose Advanced Options
      3. Choose TCP
      4. Set your APN as required
      5. Save and exit
    4. If your APN is set correctly, or if you do not have a GSM phone, then the next thing to try is setting the vlingo Connection Type setting. This is accessed by clicking the vlingo icon and selecting vlingo Options. The different settings are:

Auto: vlingo will try to choose the best connection for you. It will try Direct TCP first, then MDS (if available), then BIS. This is the recommended setting, although in some cases it may be necessary to set the connection type explicitly.
Direct TCP: Uses your carrier's Direct TCP connection. For a GSM phone, make sure that your APN is set correctly (see instructions above). Since Auto tries this first, it is generally not necessary to set this explicitly. Some carriers do not support this connection type, or may charge for it.
BIS: Uses RIM's BIS network to connect.
MDS: Only available if your BlackBerry is enterprise-enabled. In some cases, your BlackBerry administrator may have restricted other types.

Finally, if none of these work please contact vlingo Support. The best way to do this is through the Send Feedback page in vlingo, or by going to the support page.

  • I am running BlackBerry OS version 4.5 or 4.6 (Bold). Do you support my device?
  • We do not officially support version 4.5 or 4.6 (Bold) at this time. However, many users have reported that they are successfully able to run the 4.3 version of vlingo on the 4.5 operating system. While we can't promise that it will work for you, if you would like to try it you can get it by requesting vlingo (get it here) and specifying the 4.3 BlackBerry Operating System version. For the 4.6 (Bold ), download the 4.6 version of vlingo. Again, we cannot promise that it will work for you.

  • When I try to run vlingo, I get the message "Error Starting vlingoforBlackberry_en module vlingoforblackberry_en_2 attempts to access a secure API".
  • This is a known problem. We are working on fixing it, but in the meantime we have a workaround that should get you going. The workaround is to download the sideload version of the application, and to install it using the BlackBerry Desktop Manager.

The specific steps for doing this are:

    1. Determine the Operating System version of your BlackBerry. This can be determined by going to "Options" in your Applications folder, and choosing "About". The first entry will show your phone model and operating system version. For example, BlackBerry 8130 smartphone (CDMA) v4.3.0.60- in this case the operating system version is 4.3.
    2. Download the zip file below that corresponds to your BlackBerry OS:

      BlackBerry OS 4.2.x: vlingoForBlackBerry_en_42.zip
      BlackBerry OS 4.3.x: vlingoForBlackBerry_en_43.zip
      BlackBerry OS 4.6.x: vlingoForBlackBerry_en_46.zip
    3. Note to 4.5 users: You should download the 4.3 version. See our FAQ regarding current vlingo support for 4.5

    4. Download the vlingo for BlackBerry application zip file for your operating system version and save it to your desktop.
    5. Extract the contents of the zip file, saving the contents to your desktop.
    6. Open the BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
    7. Use a data cable to connect your BlackBerry to your computer. Wait for the Desktop Manager to indicate that the device has connected successfully.
    8. Open the "Application Loader" icon. The Application Loader Wizard will appear.
    9. Click Next.
    10. From the list of installed applications, click "Add..."
    11. From the file chooser, navigate to My Desktop, and select the .alx file that you downloaded from vlingo.
    12. Click Open.
      1. The new application is added to the list as "vlingo".
      2. Note: If you are running Desktop Manager version 4.2, you may see an error indicating there are no applications to install. If this happens, you will need to upgrade to version 4.3.
    13. Click Next.
    14. Click Finish.
    15. When you get "The loading operation was successful", click Close.
    16. Disconnect the BlackBerry from your computer.
    17. The Desktop Manager should now reboot your BlackBerry. If it doesn't, you should do this manually by removing and re-installing the battery.
    18. Close the BlackBerry Desktop Manager.

At this point, your installation is complete. The next (and last) step before you start using vlingo is to go through the setup process on your BlackBerry:
    1. From your BlackBerry Home screen, press the Menu button.
    2. Find the vlingo icon (a blue circle with a smaller white circle inside it) and click on it to begin the setup process.
    3. Follow the on-device instructions to complete the setup process.
    4. You're now ready to start using vlingo!
  • I am getting a message about permissions, and it is keeping me from running vlingo. How do I fix it?
  • We see three different flavors of this problem, which have three different solutions. Please choose the case that best corresponds to yours:
    • It tells me that the WiFi permission is not set, but I do not have a WiFi device.

    • We have identified an issue on certain devices in which vlingo is unable to proceed because it believes that it needs WiFi permissions, even though the device it is running on does not support WiFi. Unfortunately, we do not have a workaround for this. We will be releasing an update to vlingo in August, and will have a fix for this in that release. To be notified when the fix is available, please send a note to vlingosupport@vlingo.com and ask us to notify you when the "WiFi Permissions" fix is available. You can also submit your request through the Contact Support form
    • The only permission it tells me is not set is the Company Network permission.

    • We have identified an issue in which some users see a message stating that vlingo needs the "Connections - Company Network" permission to be set in order to proceed, even though their device is not BES-enabled. We will be releasing an update to vlingo in August that will have a fix for this, but in the meantime there is a workaround if you would like to try it.

The workaround is to edit your BlackBerry default permissions to set Company Network to Allow. Then, you apply the default permissions to vlingo.

The specific steps for this are:

      1. From your BlackBerry Home screen, choose Options, Advanced Options, and then Applications.
      2. Press the Menu key, and choose "Edit Default Permissions"
      3. Change the Company Network permission to Allow. You may need to expand Connections to see Company Network by selecting the Connections line, pressing the Menu key, and choosing Expand. Change the setting of Company Network by selecting it, pressing the Menu key, and choosing Change Option.
      4. Press the Menu button and choose Save to return to the Applications screen.
      5. Scroll down to vlingo, press the Menu key, and choose Edit Permissions.
      6. Press the Menu key, and choose Apply Defaults.
      7. Press the Menu key and choose Save.
      8. Exit back to the BlackBerry Home screen, and click the vlingo icon again.
      9. If your default permissions restricted other permissions vlingo needs, you may be prompted again to set them at this point. But you should now be able to proceed normally in configuring and using vlingo.

If you try this workaround, please let us know whether or not it worked for you, and if not please let us know what error message you receive. You can let us know by sending an email to vlingosupport@vlingo.com or by filling out the Contact Support form.

    • I am getting a message about different permissions not being set.

    • Typically, we see that the permissions being restricted are Company Network, Carrier Internet, and Phone, although sometimes it is slightly different from these. We see this case when the phone is connected to a BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) on which the BES Administrator has restricted some of the permissions for 3rd party applications on your BlackBerry, including permissions required for vlingo to run. For vlingo to work on your device, your BES Administrator will need to make configuration changes to allow it.

We have put together some basic information that you can forward to your BES Administrator explaining the issue. We would be interested to hear from you, or from your Administrator, whether or not they were willing to enable permissions, or if the steps we outline do not solve the problem. We would be happy to work with them if they have any concerns or questions that we might be able to address. The best way to contact us is by sending an email to vlingosupport@vlingo.com, or by filling out the Contact Support form.

Copy this message and send it to your BES Administrator. The link at the end gives them all of the information that they need to solve the problem.

This is a message from vlingo Support. Vlingo improves your employees' safety and productivity by allowing them to speak rather than type to compose text messages and emails, dial calls, and search the web. It accomplishes this with our innovative and game-changing speech recognition technology - the only technology on the market that allows mobile users to speak anything in the English language at any time. Vlingo is a completely free application available by pointing your BlackBerry browser to www.vlingo.com/getvlingo . We take our users' privacy very seriously, and do not disclose any personal information outside of vlingo without their express consent for clearly defined purposes. Our privacy policy is at http://www.vlingo.com/privacy.html. If you want to learn more about vlingo, you can find additional information at http://www.vlingo.com/vlingo/download.jsp, including our online User Guide and Support information.

A user on your BES has attempted to install vlingo on their device, but has found that it is unable to run due to permissions restrictions. For vlingo to run properly, certain permissions must be set to "Allow". Even if you have not intentionally restricted any permissions, we have found that in some cases the necessary permissions can be restricted if the device in question has a Software Configuration applied to it, even if the configuration does not explicitly apply restrictions.

      BES Administrator Instructions
  • I am a BES Administrator. What do I need to know about getting vlingo working on my network?
  • Please see the instructions for BES administrators.
  • Do you support SureType?
  • The current version of our software does not support SureType. However, we are hard at work on new features, and one of the big drivers is requests from our users! New releases will be announced on our web site.
  • When I push the side key, vlingo does not display the "Listening" box.
  • When you push the side key assigned to vlingo, you should see a "Listening" dialog box come up indicating that vlingo is running, and listening to your input. Normally everything gets set in the setup process. If the setup process does not complete successfully, or if any of the needed settings get changed, it may be necessary to manually correct the settings.

To do this, follow these steps.

    1. Make sure that the side key is set up correctly for vlingo. The following steps will verify this (or fix it):
      1. First, set the BlackBerry settings
        1. From Applications, select Options, and then Screen/Keyboard.
        2. Scroll down until you get to the Right (or Left) Side Convenience Key Opens setting. Make sure that the key you want running vlingo it is set to Nothing. It might be tempting to set it vlingo, but don't do that or it won't work correctly. We know that sounds strange, but that is the way it works.
        3. Save your settings and exit.
      2. Next, check the vlingo settings.
        1. Find the vlingo icon, and click it.
        2. Choose "vlingo Options".
        3. Make sure that the Voice Key setting is set consistently with the key you set to Nothing in step 2 (either Right or Left).
        4. Make sure the "Voice Key Active" setting is set to "Always". This ensures that you can use the side key from anywhere, not just from a vlingo screen.
      3. If the settings are correct, the next thing to verify is that all of your device's permissions are set correctly. Again, this should happen as a part of setup. But if setup did not complete successfully, or if the permissions were changed, you may need to do this manually.
        1. Open your BlackBerry Options screen, choose "Advanced Options", and then choose "Applications".
        2. Scroll down to "vlingo" and press your Menu key. Then choose "Edit Permissions".
        3. If any permissions are set to "Deny" or "Default", change them to "Allow".
        4. Press your Menu key and choose "Save".
      4. If all of your settings are correct, the final thing to try is to find the vlingo application icon and click it (if you didn't already do this in step 1). This will reset the process that "listens" for the side key. If everything else is set correctly, once you have done this you should be able to use your sidekey again.

If this does not solve your problem, please let us know by contacting support. Please be as specific as you can about what error you are getting, and about the things you already tried.

  • What suggestions do you have about getting the best possible speech recognition?
  • Vlingo uses highly advanced speech recognition technology to deliver the best accuracy possible. As with humans, it will sometimes misunderstand what you say. The answers to the following questions provide information about how you can improve the accuracy of the vlingo speech recognition.

What if I am somewhere noisy?

If there is a lot of random background noise like street noise, car noise, or background conversation in a loud restaurant, hold the phone closer to your mouth and speak louder.

If the background noise is distinct conversation such as a nearby radio or someone talking near you, vlingo may not be able to distinguish your words from theirs. Turn down the radio or move a bit further away from the other conversation.

If you are in a very quiet environment, you can speak more softly.

How should I hold the phone?

Hold it either as you would when you are on a call, or with the phone a few inches in front of your mouth.

    How loudly should I speak?

Start out by speaking as you would to another person. Experiment with speaking somewhat louder or softer.

    Any other accuracy suggestions?
    • Be sure to pronounce words clearly but naturally.
    • Do not pause between each word.
    • Begin speaking shortly after the audio tone finishes playing. Release the side key shortly after you are done speaking. Long periods of silence can cause vlingo to pick up background noise as intended speech.

How does vlingo learn over time?

Vlingo gets better the more you use it. It begins to adapt to your voice as quickly as the first few times you speak to it. The learning continues as long as you use the product.

It also learns the words, phrases, and sentences you commonly speak. If vlingo makes a mistake and you correct it, vlingo will learn to avoid making the same mistake again later.

Vlingo also learns from what other users say and uses that knowledge to improve its accuracy for you.

    What languages does vlingo understand?

Vlingo is currently implemented for English only; it does not understand any other language.

  • What applications can I launch with the "open" command (e.g., "open calendar")?
  • Currently, you can use vlingo to open the following built-in applications:
    • Calendar
    • Address Book
    • Maps
    • Web Browser
    • Email
    • Tasks
    • MemoPad
  • How do I reply to or forward emails or text messages using vlingo?
  • First, make sure that you are running version 1.1 or later of vlingo. Earlier versions do not have this ability. To check your version of vlingo:

    1. Click the vlingo icon on your Home screen.
    2. Select Help.
    3. Select About vlingo
    4. If the version starts with 1.0, you should download the latest version by pointing your built-in BlackBerry browser to:

  • How do I send an email or SMS to multiple recipients?
  • Currently vlingo does not support sending to emails or text messages to multiple recipients. We have heard feedback from our users asking for this feature, and do plan to add it to a future release.

  • How do I send an email to someone not in my address book?
  • Currently vlingo does not support sending emails to recipients not in your address book. We have heard feedback from our users asking for this feature, and do plan to add it to a future release.

  • I have an idea about a feature that would make vlingo even better.
How do I send it to you?
  • Your feedback is very important to us, and we want to hear from you. Suggestions from our users is a big part of what helps us to decide what to work on next.

There are two easy ways to send us your feedback:

    1. From vlingo: Click the vlingo icon, then choose "Send Feedback" from the main screen. Set the subject accordingly (e.g., "Make Suggestion"), speak or type your message, and send it to us!
    2. Go to our "Contact Support" page, and send us a note.

We're looking forward to hearing from you!

  • I have multiple email accounts on my BlackBerry. How do I choose which one vlingo sends from?
  • Currently, we do not support the ability to send from different accounts. If you have multiple email accounts on your BlackBerry, vlingo will send the email from your default account. However, being able to send from different accounts is a feature we are considering for a future version.

  • How do I get vlingo to do a better job of capitalizing correctly?
  • We are constantly working to improve vlingo. Improving automated handling of capitalization is something we are working on now. In fact, when we make improvements like this they happen on our servers, so you won't even need to download anything new to get the benefits.

  • How do I get vlingo to insert punctuation without having to type it?
  • You can simply vlingo the punctuation that you want it to use as you speak. For example, you can say things like "question mark", "comma", and "period" and vlingo will put in the corresponding punctuation mark.

  • Vlingo returned a word or a phrase that I find offensive, and that I certainly did not say!
  • We have put a lot of effort into not incorrectly returning offensive language. If we didn't do a good enough job of that in your case, we definitely want to know about it so we can see what we can do to prevent it from happening again.

First, please make sure that you have "Content Filtering" turned on. If this setting is on and vlingo thinks that you said a phrase that is in the content filter's list, it will display the first letter of each word followed by asterisks (*). This option does not affect text that you type.

To turn content filtering on (it is turned on by default):

    1. Find the vlingo icon, and click it.
    2. Choose "vlingo Options".
    3. Scroll down to Content Filtering, and make sure it is set to "On".
    4. Exit the Options screen, choosing "Save" to save your changes.

If you had content filtering turned on and it returned offensive language anyway, if you send us information about what you said, and what was returned, we will investigate to determine what we can do to prevent it in the future. Send it to us by contacting support, or by using vlingo's Send Feedback feature (you get to it by clicking the vlingo icon).

  • What devices does vlingo support?
  • At this time, vlingo runs on the BlackBerry Pearl (81xx series), the BlackBerry Curve (83xx series) and BlackBerry 8800 devices (88xx series). As we support new devices, we will announce the support on our web site. We expect to add support for the Bold (9xxx series) shortly after the major carriers in the United States and Canada begin distributing it.

  • What versions of the BlackBerry Operating System does vlingo support?
  • Vlingo runs on released BlackBerry OS versions 4.2.1 and higher.

Although many users have reported success running version 4.5 and 4.6 (Bold), we can not yet support that version. We expect to support 4.5 and 4.6 shortly after its official release by the major carriers in the United States and Canada.

  • None of these answer my question. How can I contact you?
  • If none of the answers on the FAQ page answered your question, please send us a note. The best way to do that is through the Send Feedback feature in vlingo (click the vlingo icon on your phone, and choose Send Feedback). You can also go to our Contact Support page from your PC. If you are having a problem, please send us as much detail as you can.
